The Proposal for a New High School Assessment and Accountability System for Minnesota

College and Career-Ready Policy Institute Assessment Working Group

March 1, 2010

In late May, the Minnesota Legislature passed and Governor Pawlenty signed a law authorizing the creation of a task force to develop recommendations for the next generation of Minnesota’s high school assessment and accountability system. The Assessment and Accountability Task Force will conduct its work as part of a larger effort being led by the Minnesota Department of Education with support from national partner organizations to ensure that all students graduate from high school truly ready for postsecondary education and a rewarding career. The task force is comprised of leaders from K-12 organizations, higher education institutions, businesses and other key stakeholders in Minnesota’s educational system. The group is being co-chaired by Dirk Mattson, the Director of Assessment at the Minnesota Department of Education and Kent Pekel, Executive Director of the University of Minnesota’s College Readiness Consortium. In the fall of 2009, the task force will release and seek feedback on a set of recommendations for the next generation of Minnesota’s high school assessment and accountability system. The task force will present its final recommendations to the Commissioner of Education and the legislature before the end of December, 2009.

The task force has developed a work plan that includes ten distinct Decision Gateways that the group will consider in sequential order. You can view those Gateways on the following form: Decision Gateways Graphic

In addition the Taskforce has created a feedback form through which interested individuals can share their thoughts on high school assessment and accountability. Please complete this form as soon as possible and not later than July 15. Thank you in advance for your time and ideas.
